If you look closely here, you will see that there are four shepherds in the foreground of this scene, and two smaller figures in the background. The image of Gabriel appearing with the message is dominant in this illustration, as the area around the figure is deeply carved out to depict a radiant light. The four shepherds in the foreground exhibit very expressive poses. The figure closest to the front seems to curl his hand, as if fearful, or overcome with emotion. The shepherds in this illustration appear more impoverished than the shepherds in our earlier example. They wear pelts of fur and have long beards.
