Brief Biography
Dr. Donna Tonrey is currently the director of the Counseling and Family Therapy Master’s Programs at La Salle University. She is a licensed psychologist, marriage and family therapist, and professional counselor in Pennsylvania. Dr. Tonrey served on the PA State Licensing Board for nine years, four of which she served as Chair of the Board. Dr. Tonrey’s research has focused on couples and families, and she developed the Family Building Projective Technique, which has been used widely in mental health agencies. Dr. Tonrey continues to practice clinically, as well as teach in the master’s program. She is also an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, and she provides supervision for therapists and counselors preparing to become licensed.
Description
This workshop will review the reality of families facing autism, and how this can lead to a family system become emotionally over-functioning. Through this overfunctioning a family can sometimes become emotionally enmeshed, which can lead toward lower self-advocacy for each family member and particularly the family member who has autism.
