The man on the horse in front of “Butler Place” is the novelist Owen Wister, who married the daughter of Fanny Kemble and Pierce Butler. Wister’s novel The Virginian, the first “Western,” was one of the best-selling books of the first half of the Twentieth Century—and the source for five movies and a long-running (1962-1971) and very popular TV series.
