Abstract

Dr. Gary Galván curates the Edwin A. Fleisher Collection of Orchestral Music at the Free Library of Philadelphia, the largest collection of circulating orchestral performance materials in the world. In 1993 he received his Bachelor of Music degree from Rowan University in guitar performance, specializing in jazz. Then in 2001 he received his Master of Arts in Music Education with tracks in extended content focusing on classical Latin American guitar at the University of Central Florida. Lastly, in 2007 he completed his Ph.D. in historical musicology at the University of Florida, pursuing complementary studies in art history and digital media. A jazz and classical guitarist by training, he has performed at the Moulin d’Ande in Normandy and with the University of Florida’s Jacaré Brazil. He has presented his research on twentieth-century Pan American orchestral music and media at myriad colloquia across the nation and around the world including: the Music and Moving Image Conference in New York City, the International College Music Society Conference in Bangkok and Ayutthaya, Thailand, and the International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities in Granada, Spain. He has written extensively on classical and Latin American music, contributing to wide array of peer-reviewed journals and texts such as American Music, The New Grove Dictionary of American Music, and Musicians and Composers of the Twentieth Century. He is an editor for Latin American Classical Composers: A Biographical Dictionary, to be released in 2016, and is working on a book about Edwin Fleisher and his pivotal role in the Pan American “symphonic coming of age.” He teaches a wide variety of music topics at La Salle University. In this interview, Dr. Galván discusses the history of the Edwin A. Fleisher Collection of Orchestral Music, his ten year affiliation with the collection, and offers his vision for what he hopes to accomplish in his first year as curator. At the time of the interviews, Dr. Galván taught part-time at La Salle University.
