Description

Wood engraving.

This limited edition book features wood engravings by famed Florentine artist Bruno Bramanti (1897-1957). The artist spent several months in Palestine preparing the engravings for this volume. This book was published by Catholic publishers Pellegrini and Cudahy, in New York in 1951.

Analysis

This modern engraving shows the figure of Jesus in a white robe. He is shown with a cruciform halo, holding his right hand to his heart. His left hand is extended. He stands on three tiers of clouds. The figures of the disciples stand in clusters below. In the foreground one disciple kneels in reverence. One interesting aspect of this illustration is the detail of the olive tree which frames the scene. In Christian iconography the olive branch is a symbol of peace.
